About Us
The Sun Land Garden Products story begins in the 1950’s when an enterprising young man recently back from the Air Force started a poultry farm to support his new family. Ed Minasian began hauling sawdust from the Harris Mill in Watsonville to use as bedding on his chicken ranch, Sun Land Poultry. Ed needed to dispose of the manure from his ranch and local farmers needed to amend their fields. It was soon clear the demand for a reliable source of well blended soil was stronger than the demand for chickens and Sun Land Garden Products was born.
Soon Ed was processing more and more raw materials as container growers began requesting modifications to the sawdust for use in growing media. Since Ed’s primary concern was quality, he wasn’t satisfied with piling these materials together and mixing them up with a loader. Together with an imaginative engineer, Ed designed and built one of the first continuous mix lines in California.
In the 40 years since then, Sun Land Garden Products has become a well respected manufacturer of soilless media for both Retail and Commercial Horticulture. Sun Land has two fully computerized mix lines to precisely blend components and amendments. Like a fine micro-brewery, we mix our soils individually and send samples out to an independent lab for testing. Our reputation for innovative product development, quality and an unrelenting commitment to customer satisfaction continues.
Our retail division produces more than a million bags of retail product per year and Sun Land All Purpose Potting Soil was recently rated one of the top soil mixes available in California according to the LA Times. Our products are available at fine independent garden centers all over California. Please ask your garden center for Sun Land products.
Our commercial division serves all of California and is reaching into the interior west. Our reputation as an adaptable and reliable partner provides a level of service unavailable with other soil manufacturers. Sun Land Garden Products is a family owned business and spans three generation of the Minasians. As for Ed, he maintains his role as an advisor, but has turned day to day operations over to his son Brian who carries on the family tradition and will eventually pass it on to his son.
Our commitment to your success is the key to our success. We understand you have options when you choose a vendor and we hope our commitment to you will earn your consideration.
