How to Conserve Water in the Garden

Here in the West, lower rainfalls, dropping water tables and increased population all add up to a greater demand for water than our reserves can handle. We are taking water from our deep wells and water table faster than nature can replenish it. Indeed, many Southern California communities are already facing mandatory water rationing! We can all voluntarily help conserve our precious resource in the garden if we follow just a few easy rules.

Easy rules for conservation

  1. Mulch everything. Redwood Soil Conditioner is both useful and very decorative.
  2. Add organic matter (such as Sun Land One Earth or OSH Garden Compost) to help soils retain more moisture.
  3. Have a smaller lawn. Lawns are the greatest water hog in the average American landscape. Replace parts of large lawn area with a deck or brick patio for outside recreation area.
  4. Install drip irrigation.
  5. Plant Native trees, shrubs and plants that don’t require much water. Your local nursery should be able to help you. More water conservation tips can be gotten from your local water department, Sunset’s Waterwise Gardening, and Taylor’s Guide to Watersaving Gardening. You can have a vibrant and alive yard and save water for drinking at the same time.
